STOKE CHASERS

8 minutes, directed by Jo Anna Edmison, 2020

With a filter that is oh-so-California, this film — which was shot on 16mm film — celebrates young women athletes breaking into sports long dominated by men. They are skateboarders, surfers and longboarders. “Headstrong is a word reserved for girls who break the mold,” one says. “And the mold is to play it safe.”

UNNUR

17 minutes, directed by Chris Burkard, 2020

Icelandic photographer Elli Thor lives with his daughter Unnur — who is named after the god of the ocean’s daughter — in a cabin near the beach. Fifteen years after surviving a near-death experience while kayaking, it is surfing and living a simple life with Unnur that gives Thor’s life meaning. Unnur is a tender snapshot of a father who tries to give his daughter the courage to follow her path, not the one society chooses for her.
